MoviePrint can make your life even easier. Take screenshots of movies in an instant to …

These are the basics on how to create your first MoviePrint.

WHAT IS IT?

A MoviePrint is an image made out of screenshots of a movie. It helps you select, analyse, present or archive movies with the help of a single image.

ADD MOVIES

Drag in one more movies or use the Add Movies button on the top left.

SET IN AND OUTPOINT

Using the IN and OUT buttons you can define the range in which an interval based MoviePrint get’s created.

This way you can for example easily remove intro and credits from your MoviePrint.

Note: Do this step before you do any other adjustments as it will overwrite your previous thumbs in this MoviePrint.

CHOOSE OTHER FRAME

With the Scrub feature you can easily choose a different frame.

Pro tip: As an alternative you could also use shot detection as a base and hide the shots you are not interested in. Check out Analyse for details.

INSERT THUMBS

Are you missing important frames? Just insert thumbs and hide the ones you do not need.

REARRANGE THUMBS

Not happy with the order? You can easily rearrange using drag-n-drop.

With the Sort feature you can get the thumbs back in order. Just sort them by frame number.

Pro tip: Thumbs in shot based MoviePrints can not be rearranged as they represent a specific shot. To get around that constraint, just convert them into an interval based MoviePrint.

DUPLICATE MOVIEPRINTS

You can make as many variants you want. Just duplicate the MoviePrint.

SAVE SINGLE THUMB

Need to export a specific frame? Use the SAVE button and the image gets saved in its original resolution onto the Desktop.

Pro tip: You can specify the location and the default name in the settings.

SAVE SELECTION

Your MoviePrints are kept when you restart the software, but you might still want to share your selection or save it for later.

When saving MoviePrints in the PNG format, frame numbers and file paths are embedded by default.

These PNGs can be imported again. Has the file path changed? Just point MoviePrint to the new location.

Pro tip: The selection can also be saved as a JSON file.

REPLACE MOVIE

Are you a colourist and want to compare differently graded versions of the same movie? Then just replace the movie with another version. Your frame selection is kept.

Pro tip: replace movie can also be used to speed up working within MoviePrint. Start out with a lo-res version, do all your adjustments and before you save your MoviePrints replace it with a hi-res version of your movie.

Check out Analyse for more advanced selection, Present and Archive for details on styling and other export options.

Here are some ideas on how to use more advanced methods to analyse a movie and create a MoviePrint.

USE SHOT DETECTION

A MoviePrint based on shot detection gives a good base to start diving into a movie.

The grid view shows one thumb for every shot.

Pro tip: a shot detected movie can be exported as EDL

TRY OUT TIMELINE VIEW

In the timeline view the length of each shot is represented by its width.

REFINE SHOT DETECTION

In the player view you can move through the movie and easily adjust the cuts by cutting and merging scenes.

The quality of the detected shots depends on the character of the movie.

Pro tip: Try out the “Histogram” shot detection method to detect shots. It is slower, but can improve detection in some cases.

CHOOSE FRAME FOR SHOT

With the Scrub feature you can easily scrub through the shot and pick a different frame.

EXPAND SHOT

Want to take a closer look at a specific shot? Just click on Expand to create an interval based MoviePrint of the shot.

INSERT THUMBS

Are you missing important frames? Just insert thumbs and hide the ones you do not need.

Unlike the constrained shot based MoviePrint, the interval based MoviePrint gives you full freedom over the grid.

DUPLICATE MOVIEPRINTS

Create variants of a MoviePrint by duplicating it as often as you like.

USE FACE DETECTION

Only interested in thumbs with faces in it? Create a faces based MoviePrint.

Then sort and filter it by different parameters.

Pro tip: Combine shot and face detection to keep shots with faces only.

FIND A FACE

All scanned frames can be searched for a specific face. The algorithm is not yet flawless, but provides a good starting point.

Pro tip: Use the unique faces slider to adjust what the computer considers the same face.

Check out Select for simple selection, Present and Archive for details on styling and export and additional options.

Here are some ideas on how to set up and style your MoviePrints.

FIND THE PERFECT GRID

How are you going to use the MoviePrint? Share it, print it or use it in a presentation?

Choose a guide layout to perfectly adjust your grid.

CHOOSE THE GRID SIZE

The column and row sliders let you choose the grid size you like. Every time you change the size of the grid, new frames between your selected In- and Outpoints are being captured.

Pro tip: With the expert mode you can increase the grid size to 100×100. You have to be very very patient though 🙂

INCLUDE MOVIE INFORMATION

You can include movie information into the MoviePrint using a customisable header. Choose to show

  • Movie name
  • File path
  • Length | frame rate | frame size | file size | codec
  • Timeline showing in and outpoints and thumb markers

ADJUST GRID MARGIN

With the slider you can adjust the margin to give your grid a specific look.

You can also switch between rectangular and rounded thumbs.

SHOW INFO IN FRAME

You can choose to show frame numbers or timecode and adjust their colour and position.

EDIT ROTATION, CROPPING AND ASPECT RATIO

Does your movie have black borders, is it rotated, does it have the wrong aspect ratio or do you want to experiment with square thumbs? Just update its transform.

CHANGE BACKGROUND COLOUR

Need transparency or a coloured background? Just pick what works best for you.

Check out Analyse and Archive for details on set up and export options.

This is how you adjust MoviePrint to fit into your archival workflow.

ADJUST EXPORT OPTIONS

Specify where the MoviePrints should be saved, specify their size and format and if you want to include the individual frames.

RENAME MOVIEPRINTS

To stay organised and identify the saved MoviePrints, just rename it in the movie list.

CHANGE DEFAULT NAMES

Change the way MoviePrints, single thumbs and included thumbs are named when saved.

SAVE ALL MOVIEPRINTS

Depending on the amount of thumbs and the size of the movie, saving a MoviePrint can take some time. With Save All MoviePrints you can let it run and save them all at once.

Check out Analyse and Present for details on set up and styling options.
